UK National Debt Declining?

February 18, 2010

According the UK Office for National Statistics, the UK public debt declined to £845,500,000,000 at the end of January from £870,000,000,000 at the end of December. We notice these fluctuations from time to time, which is why John Bull’s Debt Clock extrapolates based on two to three months of data, so will still show the debt rising for now.

I uploaded a new version (1.5) with these latest numbers – should be in the App Store in a few days to a week or so.

National Debt Per Resident to Increase by $6000

February 5, 2010

Expect to see your share of the national debt increase by about $6000 over the next year.

House Increases Debt Ceiling by $1.9 Trillion

February 5, 2010

The House of Representatives today voted to increase the U.S. debt ceiling by $1.9 trillion to $14.3 trillion.

This is by far the largest increase ever in the debt limit.  The next largest increase (which was in 2003) was just about half as big.  If you’re curious about historical increases, see Table 7.3 at

http://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/budget/Historicals/

Looks like they increased it just in time.  According to our iPhone app Uncle Sam’s Debt Clock, the national debt is now above $12.36 trillion and quickly approaching the previous debt ceiling of $12.394 trillion.
